Fort Drum Trains Over & On Whiteface Mountain
When it comes to New York's geography, the high peaks region of the Adirondacks comes closest to resembling Afghanistan.

Media joins in Black Hawk fly-along from Fort Drum to Whiteface
Pilot Casey Pfannenstel circled his UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter around the top of Whiteface Mountain, not far above two sightseers who were sitting on the rocky peak taking in the view of the Adirondacks. It wasn't long before the helicopter found a perch of its own, touching down for a third time on a section of the Whiteface Veteran's Memorial Highway during a training sortie Friday.

This week, the Army's 10th Mountain Combat Aviation Brigade began exercises on Whiteface Mountain, taking advantage of New York's fifth-highest peak as helicopter pilots and crews train to deploy later this year in Afghanistan.
