Local farms, Trees for Troops assist in military families' Christmas
Bearing handmade holiday ornaments from area schoolchildren, more than 100 Christmas trees were loaded up Monday to be shipped to military families this morning.

As part of the Trees for Troops project, about 12 local tree growers donated the trees, mostly Frasier and Balsam varieties known to hold their needles for at least a month. Some of the farmers and several elected officials from the area stood in the open fields at Ellms Tree Farm to show support for the members of the New York Army National Guard 42nd Infantry, based in Troy, who loaded the carefully wrapped trees into an enormous FedEx truck. The shipping company donates its services to send trees from 29 states to destinations such as Afghanistan and Iraq.
