GHORMACH, Afghanistan – Dozens of piles of gravel lay in downtown Gormach untouched since construction came to a halt months ago. Crumbling to the ground are local shops amid dusty streets where vendors offer basic items including bicycle parts and naan, the local flat bread.
Soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 6th Field Artillery Regiment moving into the Gormach District have started their mission by aiding the people of the area and forming relationships with the local leaders.

All morning, several teams of of 10th Mountain Division soldiers — and even a few civilians — participated in Fort Drum's Iron Chef competition. They baked, sautéed, grilled and fried to create an original meal that would please the palate of a panel of judges. And while the soldiers who cooked the best meal stood a chance at elevating their careers as chefs, almost all who participated said they were most interested in simply exchanging cooking ideas and trying to raise the bar when it came to the pursuit of cooking on post.

Soldiers with Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, said their final farewells to 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Iraqi Federal Police Division, at a farewell dinner at Joint Security Station Shield April 4.
The Soldiers of Battery A packed up their gear to move out of JSS Shield after working with federal policemen for more than six months. They conducted everything from patrols to raids together. Lately, the relationship has changed for 2-15 from joint missions to advising and assisting the police officers when they were asked.

A Fort Drum Soldier died Tuesday, April 6 after being
struck by a vehicle while on leave in Crestview, Fla.
The Fort Drum Soldier dead is Spc. Randall R.C. Landstedt, 22, of
Pollock Pines, Calif.
Spc. Landstedt served as an infantryman with the 1st Battalion, 32nd
Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division
(Light Infantry).
Spc. Landstedt joined the Army in April 2007 and arrived to Fort Drum in
September 2007. He deployed to Afghanistan with the 3rd BCT from
November 2009 to January 2010.
Spc. Landstedt is survived by his mother and father.

Press Release- Fort Drum Releases 2009 Economic Impact Statement
Fort Drum, NY – Despite global economic hard times, fiscal year 2009 once again marked significant investment by Fort Drum in Northern New York.
A detailed review of the economic impact Fort Drum had on the North Country’s tri-county area over the last fiscal year shows $1,502,834,542 billion dollars was leveraged in support of the 18,023 Soldiers and 17,222 Family members who call Fort Drum and the North Country home.
Since fiscal year 1988, this Army installation has infused more than $13,764,342,783 billion dollars into the local economy.
“Our Soldiers, Families and Civilians are able to meet the challenges of our constant deployment cycle through training, support services and our second to none support we receive from our North Country neighbors. Our economic impact is the tangible investment. The intangible dividends – the emotional investment we receive from the community - are of equal value,” said Col. Kenneth H. Riddle, Fort Drum Garrison Commander.
Fort Drum is the largest employer in Northern New York with 18,023 Soldiers and 4,782 Civilian workers with payrolls totaling $927,185,124 and $158,215,622 respectively. Retirees from all military branches who live in the 136XX zip code number 2,173 who are paid a total of $3,241,000 a month ($38,892,000 a year) which flows into our local economy.
Housing for our Soldiers and Families has a major impact on the North Country economy. Fort Drum spent $2,660,419 million dollars on Army Community Housing in LeRay Heights and added another $2,032,660 million dollars on the Domestic Lease Program during FY 09.
Fort Drum posted another strong year in 2009 with contracts for construction, supplies and services totaling just over $190,471,181 million dollars, with $62,836,998 million dollars of that money being spent in the tri-county area. The Army Corps of Engineers awarded construction contracts totaling $113,200,000 million dollars which includes contractor pay for work at Fort Drum. A new $8.1 million dollar dental clinic opened in October 2009 with much of the work done by local community contractors.
“Fort Drum must serve as a platform of readiness – maintained for and by our Soldiers, Families and Civilians. A large part of supporting our current and future requirements is realized through regular modernization and new construction in order to maintain efficient and sustainable operations,” said Riddle.
Area school districts received $17,567,049 million dollars in federal impact aid for the loss of traditional revenue sources due to a federal presence such as the military families who call the North Country home. In addition, Fort Drum authorized just over $436,987 thousand dollars in tuition assistance to local colleges. Approximately 1,400 Soldiers used the tuition assistance program to enroll in traditional and distance learning college courses.

'Take a Soldier Fishing' tournament set for April 24 on Oneida Lake
The ice is gone, warm weather has arrived and local fishing tournaments aren’t far behind.
Among the more unique contests is the “Take a Soldier Fishing, “ set for April 24 on Oneida Lake.
A total of 40 local bass anglers, all members of New York B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation, have volunteered to take out an expected 80 active soldiers from Fort Drum for a day of fishing.
'One Diamond' fundraiser brings in $36,000 for SMC
Samaritan Auxiliary's largest annual fundraiser raised enough money to cover the cost of three instruments used to diagnose and treat cancer.
"One Night, One Diamond," held March 27 at The Commons, Fort Drum, raised almost $36,000, said Irene C. Carman, co-chairwoman of the fundraising effort and an auxiliary member.

Climb to Kilimanjaro peak completed in heavy rain
The Fort Drum soldier who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro last month to raise money for wounded comrades had no easy time of it.
Sgt. Thomas G. Bauschke endured heavy rains and flooding on his six-day journey to the summit of Africa's tallest mountain.
